WELCOME TO THE OKLAHOMA CITY SYMPHONIC BAND! We are glad you are here. We are interested in you as a prospective new member and we invite you to be a part of a proud tradition. WHAT IS THE OKLAHOMA CITY SYMPHONIC BAND? The Oklahoma Concert Band Foundation sponsors the Oklahoma City Symphonic Band. The Oklahoma City Symphonic Band is comprised of approximately ninety professional and amateur musicians. Our historic band has performed in the Oklahoma City area for decades. We are a cross-section of the community made up of all different professions. But we are also musicians who find that our band activities give us a chance to grow musically and personally. Our band rehearses and performs throughout the year, taking two breaks in the month of May and August. We rehearse every Tuesday at Southern Nazarene University from 7:15-9:15 p.m. and perform several concerts each year. WHAT IS THE OKLAHOMA CONCERT BAND FOUNDATION? The purpose of the Oklahoma Concert Band Foundation, Inc. is to engage in the promotion, appreciation and support of concert band music throughout the State of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Concert Band Foundation is a 501C3 non-profit organization supported by member dues and donations from individuals and organizations. Contributions are tax deductible and all contributors are listed in concert programs. WHAT ARE THE MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS? Membership is open to any adult who plays a band instrument and can play the music we rehearse. Dues are $25.00 per year and are not pro-rated, with the exception of our summer band that rehearses and performs in June and July. Dues are only $10.00 for the summer if the band member chooses not to play during the rest of the year. The membership year runs from September 1st through August 31st. Dues help cover a wide variety of expenses for the band. We ask that dues be paid as soon as possible after the first rehearsal of the fall season so that the membership roster can be prepared in a timely manner. Those joining at other times during the year should pay dues as soon as possible after deciding to join the band. We ask that each member abide by the following guidelines: Rehearsals and performances Oklahoma City Symphonic Band events are important. Members should arrive early so that they are prepared to rehearse or perform on time. Each member should bring a pencil, instrument or necessary equipment and music to each rehearsal and concert. Our time is valuable, so rehearsals are conducted in an efficient manner. Each band member must refrain from talking and extraneous playing during rehearsal, including stopping when the conductor stops during rehearsal. Members are encouraged to warm-up on their own as soon as they arrive. If you take music home to practice, you must return it to the band for rehearsal. There is no excuse for not getting your music to rehearsals or concerts. Attendance Band members attend every rehearsal and performance. In case of an unavoidable absence, band members should tell their section leader one week in advance of the absence or as soon as they learn of the conflict. Members who miss multiple rehearsals before a concert voluntarily disqualify themselves from the performance. However, a section leader or the conductor may request that the member play on a concert for the good of the band. It is important that this not be the normal procedure. Seating To a degree, seating is determined by seniority. Once a new member has demonstrated his dependability, the section leader may place him where he or she is most needed. Solo and part assignments are made by the section leaders and conductor. All members have the right to challenge for position. Volunteers The Oklahoma City Symphonic Band is made up of volunteers. Every person who plays in our band is important to our success. Jobs include sorting music, equipment moving, setting up for rehearsals, telephoning, publicizing our events, maintaining membership rosters, creating concert programs, requesting corporate donations, and the list goes on. There are many duties and every band member is encouraged to be active in at least one volunteer position. The band operates more efficiently when all members contribute a small portion of their time or expertise. We are eager to know of new performing opportunities or ways to improve our band.
